Chemistry 1ce by Olmsted, Williams, Burk is a newly adapted general chemistry text designed for the specific needs and requirements of Canadian professors and students for use in one or two semester introductory chemistry courses. This adaptation was based on recommendations from an advisory board of instructors from leading institutions across Canada who worked with our Canadian author throughout the development of this text to reach a consensus on topics that best suit Canadian curriculum. This text also incorporates key Canadian content in the form of SI units, IUPAC standards and significant Canadian research which more accurately reflects the discipline of Canadian chemistry than other textbooks currently on the market. Chemistry instructors will find this text sufficiently rigorous while it engages and retains student interest with accessible language, Canadian research and examples and a clear problem solving program. In order to more directly reflect the varied curriculum of Canadian chemistry courses we have uniquely created flexible options which allow instructors to decide whether they want to include or exclude early chemistry chapters for the purposes of review.
This Canadian edition retains Olmsted & Williams' innovative approach to teaching chemistry by reinforcing key concepts through molecular-level discussion and graphics. This approach encourages students to move beyond memorization of formulas and equations, to thinking critically about what is really occurring and solving problems based on what they know about the behaviour of molecules and chemical processes.

There are things I really like about this textbook (namely, it usually very clearly spells out how you derive the equations you are going to use) and things I dislike about it (sometimes it's explanations ... aren't, and it isn't clear on some instructions, which has led to a lot of wasted time on my part. (For instance, I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out from the text how you calculate concentrations, only to figure out that you either have to do the experiment OR have the concentrations provided to you in order to calculate them)... a simple explanation that these weren't something you could do at this stage would have been very helpful. Apparently they assume that you know this without telling you.For someone who is more comfortable with math, and who hasn't had professors who like to "trick" you with questions, this may not be an issue with this book. It has been both the thing I like (the math explanations) and the thing I hate (that they aren't clear in their instructions, or sometimes assume you know what they mean when I obviously didn't).
I have also found the text to be worded in such a way that I sometimes came to the opposite conclusion than say a prior class had indicated. Not sure why, but some of their explanations are not clear, and clearing it up has also taken me (in some cases) a lot of extra reading and time.
But when their explanations are clear, it's a great gook.
So not sure how to review it.
Thus, the three stars. Almost rated it four, but...

Chemistry John A Olmsted Gregory M Williams Robert C Burk 9780470155790 Books Reviews
Learning Chem is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. When I studied, my main source of knowledge was from the text books. Unfortunately, I didn't have this book when I took General Chem.
After reading this book, I realized that many authors(at least 3 of my other general chem books I own) don't emphasize on Atoms and Light(as in Ch6) much less know how to explain the topic. More over, they don't know how to arrange the material in an organized order. Comparing to this book, I'm surprised how those other Chem books could miss entirely on The Properties of Electrons (Ch6.5) which I think is the most important topic in Chem since Chem deals mainly with the Coulomb Force.
So I guess writing a Chem text book requires a lot of skill. The author need to know what to emphasize(and what not to) and know how to cleverly link the material in order that readers can easily understand. The authors of this book did just that.
The pros about this book
1. I really enjoyed the sample problems in the book. It helped prepare me for the additional problems in the book.
2. For the most part, I understood everything. Reading it was not too difficult.
The cons about this book
1. Some answers were incorrect. I had to speak with the instructor to get a couple of problems cleared.
2. The worst is that there is a solution manual available for only the Odd problems. I'd prefer a solution manual with both even and odd problems so that I can compare my work with and not hassle the professor's as much as i do to make sure i'm understanding the material.
we bought this in "new" condition and found that several pages were missing. Too bad, because what content there is very well written with excellent illustrations.
My son needed this book for college which starts up in 2 weeks. I ordered the book and it arrived quickly and ahead of schedule. The book is in excellent condition.
good condition
This was a pretty easy-to-read introductory chemistry textbook. The charts, graphs, and diagrams were set out in a useful way and I believe that they were key to my understanding in the course. I also was able to sell it for a good used price after the course. Highly recommended.
Chemistry - The molecular Science. Written in the Preface - "Success in general chemistry requires a blend of ingredients. It requires a clearly presented body of information and we hope you find it in this textbook". My comments, as an older student of chemistry and in my case, electrochemistry, this book not only gives one the information but also background to that information. It 'teaches' the reader. It has the ability with just a few well chosen words and 1612 illustrations to give the reader many 'ah ha' moments that puts many pieces of half information together. Knowing what I now know about this book I see a value of hundreds of dollars and not the pittance I paid. Thanks , I am at last on my way. I recommend this book to any serious chemistry student.
