Dan Hughes is an immature, Star Wars-obsessed 16-year-old, not enthusiastic about school or a career but when he discovers that his girlfriend, Emma, is pregnant, he has to grow up quickly. Then a routine scan shows that the baby is also likely to be affected with Down’s Syndrome and Dan and Emma must make the most difficult decision of their lives. Worse still, the timing of the scan means they have just seven days in which to do this. Luckily, Dan’s closest friends, the strangely-named Muppet, Dave the Goth and Flipper, help by planning a series of activities to test Dan’s potential as a father. Unluckily, this idea is made more difficult by heated arguments over a fishing trip to Scotland, who is the best Batman villain and how many children there were in The Waltons.

Luke I Am Your Father edition by Scott Pixello Children eBooks Reviews
This is a very cute and funny book about Dan who is 16 and about to become a father, he is totally clueless not only in fatherhood but in day to day life. Like most teens they don’t have a clue what they want to be when they grow up all they want is to be 18 and an adult. They do not understand that 16 is the easy part in life, it’s when you turn 18 life gets hard and just keeps getting tougher. The book walks you through a day and life of Dan how he sees things, how confused he is, but he is learning.
Dan decides being a father can’t be that tough, his friend decides to run him through a few days of teaching him what fatherhood is all about. He finds out it might not be so easy. Then they have to decide whether to abort the pregnancy or not when they find out the child could have Down’s syndrome. This has to be one of the toughest choices any parent has to make even tougher when you are still more or less a child yourself.
This book touches on very tough issues and at the same time makes you smile and chuckle from the humor. In no way does the author belittle the issues but looks at it from a teenage prospective. At times you feel so much pain for Dan and Emma and you just want to hug them, give them some advice. This book gives us lessons to remember and might help us if we as parents are in the same spot as Dan and Emma parents are.
I was proud to see Dan stand up to the plate and become a father. He had some growing up to do but always stood by Emma. That is the first step to adult hood taking responsible for your actions. It was tough for him but in the end he came through.
We see how child like Dan is when the nurse is asking questions and he said “Oh, yes. That’s me. Do you want my details?” The nurse shook her head. “That won’t be necessary” “You’ve done your bit.” Emma joked. “Hey don’t look to put out. That was the easy part.”
“We’d managed to create a baby, although I still wasn’t exactly sure how. Part of me was amazed and curious but the other 99.9% was just terrified. All I could think of was Alien 3. Probably best not to mention that right now.” “Well then, any vomiting?” “Well, I do feel a bit off colour,” I answered, swallowing my gag reflex, without turning round this time. Let’s just say the nurse was not impressed when she wasn’t talking to him but Emma about the vomiting….to funny.
Oh how funny when they got to see the pictures of the baby for the first time. He couldn’t tell head from tails he just knew they said it was a baby. Then it started to hit him that he was going to have a baby, he didn’t know how he was suppose to give great wisdom to a child when he was still a child himself.
In the scene with the career officer was so funny, Dan thought he was trying to ask him out when in fact he was trying to get him to join up. That was so funny but then the author throws in the seriousness when Dan said “they do love a man in uniform.” “Mmm, right up till they come home in a body-bag,” Oh the fishing story about wanting a girl who likes to fish was way too cute. There are just so much to quote in the book I could quote all day. If you want a read that is humorous and talks the talk of teens, why touching on very serious issue in today’s world this book is for you. Yes it is more directed to readers of a younger age but I found it to be a wonderful read for us older people as well. I did feel there were areas that were redundant and could have been cut out, but all in all it was a very good read that I did enjoy.
This book won't disappoint. Dan and Emma are teenage parents facing challenges as best they can.
Great read that puts everything in perspective. Funny, quirky, but so real.
